Fittipaldi at Uxbridge, Speedfest, Indy time trials

It’s the first long weekend of the spring/summer so don’t forget the Victoria Day Speedfest is on at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Just about every race series in the civilized world is on the scene there, including the NASCAR Pinty’s Series, CTCC touring cars, Pirelli World Challenge (all classes) and the Nissan Micra Cup Championship. They’re practicing Friday and then everybody’s racing Saturday and Sunday. The Pinty’s Series is the headliner, of course, and that race will go Sunday afternoon. D.J. Kennington, Andrew Ranger, Gary Klutt, L.P. Dumoulin and all the rest of the best stock car racers in Canada will be in competition. Alex Tagliani, who usually misses this first weekend because he’s racing at Indianapolis, is at CTMP for the Pinty’s season opener (he usually drives a one-off for A.J. Foyt’s team but Foyt has two-full-time drivers this season and all the seats are filled). And Robin Buck, who’s been racing since the 1980s and still going strong, is back for yet another kick at the can. Go Robin! At the Uxbridge-area Goodwood Kartways, a kid named Emmo Fittipaldi will be competing in the Eastern Canadian Karting Championships this weekend and, yes, he is the son of you-know-who and the news today is that the great, two-time World Driving Champion, is also at Goodwood. In addition to his F1 success, Emerson, of course, also won the Indianpolis 500 twice and the CART championship once. In the end, he is one of the most talented and well-rounded racing drivers ever to turn a wheel. And a very approachable guy.At Toronto Motorsports Park (near Cayuga) this weekend, the Victoria Day Drags are scheduled with 300 mph jet dragsters, the Pro Mods and top alcohol funny cars headclining the event. And you can camp out there for free with a weekend general admission.Article Continued BelowThe Southern Ontario Sprints will kick off their 2017 season Saturday night at Brighton Speedway. Brighton, by the way, is celebrating its 50th season of racing this year. Congratulations All of your favourite speedways have websites – Sunset, Peterborough, Merrittville, Flamboro – so call them all up and see what’s cookin’. Everybody is open for business now and there’s racing for every taste. Enjoy!Speaking of the Indianapolis 500, I’ve been watching practice for the big race via streaming video on www.indycar.com and you can too. It starts at noon and goes till 6.
